In the midst of the impressive mountain landscape of Zermatt, the CERVO Mountain Resort is offering an experience this winter that will challenge and revitalise body and soul in equal measure: weekly ice bathing in the hotel's own natural pond and the exclusive Icebreath Experience, which takes place at an altitude of 2,700 metres.
Led by Cristian Zanfir, CERVO's new spa manager, ice bathing combines the power of the cold with intensive breathing techniques to create a transformative experience that fits perfectly into the resort's holistic concept.
The Icebreath Experience took place for the first time on 18 February. The Riffelsee at an altitude of 2,700 metres becomes the stage for an adventure that requires courage, resilience and mindfulness.
The Icebreath Experience programme
After a breathing session in the Atman Mountain Spa and a fortifying breakfast in the Bazaar, participants set off on a ride to an altitude of 2,700 metres and hike through the snow-covered landscape to Riffelsee. Once there, a unique experience awaits them: ice bathing in the mountain lake, followed by a relaxing sauna session amidst the alpine scenery in the so-called banya, which is ready and waiting immediately after the bath. The combination of cold and heat promises not only health benefits, but also a completely new body sensation.
‘Guests can expect a transformative experience,’ explains Cristian Zanfir in an interview. ‘We combine intensive breathing techniques, mental focussing and immersion in icy water. It's not just about overcoming the cold, but also about getting to know your own limits and activating hidden resources in your body.’
Health and mental strength in harmony
Ice bathing is more than just an adventure. It offers a conscious confrontation with one's own limits and goals - and at the same time serves to promote physical and mental health. ‘The main goal is to achieve a balance between physical health and mental strength,’ emphasises Cristian. ‘The method strengthens the immune system, promotes blood circulation and regenerates the body, while at the same time building mental resilience and helping to reduce stress.’
The health benefits of ice bathing are numerous. It reduces inflammation, relieves pain, improves sleep quality and provides a natural energy boost. ‘Many people report feeling more alert, clearer and stronger after ice bathing,’ adds Cristian.
Overcoming the fear of the cold
For many people, the cold poses a major challenge. But this is precisely where the appeal lies, explains Cristian: ‘The fascination lies in the immediate effect. You can directly feel how your body reacts and adapts.’ For beginners and people who have respect for the cold, the event offers a step-by-step approach. ‘I help participants to overcome their fear through breathing techniques and mental preparation. By focussing on the moment, the fear often disappears all by itself.’
A holistic experience in the mountains of Zermatt
The CERVO Mountain Resort is known for its ‘Beyond Exploring’ credo, which focuses on well-being, balance and self-development. The Icebreath Experience fits seamlessly into this philosophy by combining the power of nature with mindfulness and personal challenge. Participants are not only looked after by Cristian, but also by the CERVO team, who provide catering and feel-good moments.
‘I love how quickly and intensively the combination of breathing techniques and cold works,’ says Cristian. ‘It shows us how much power there is in our body when we learn to work with it consciously. It's impressive to see how people rise above themselves and emerge from the ice water with a smile.’
